Special September UNC WISE Meeting

We’re excited to invite you to a special WISE meeting next Tuesday, September 3rd at 5PM in the Student Union Rm 2422 with Dr. Sheila Kannappan, Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UNC-CH. She will be leading a discussion on the topic of “unconscious bias.” For this meeting, we will embark on a personal exploration of how unconscious bias has affected your own developing careers and how you have fought it, or plan to fight it, in yourselves.  In preparation, please read the blog posts below. For those interested, further reading has been included at the end of this email.

Dr. Sheila Kannappan is currently an Assistant Professor in the department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Her research interests involve multi-wavelength observational research on galaxy formation and evolution and her research has led her to international collaborations through involvement with the RESOLVE survey and LADUMA survey. She has also been involved with the design and implementation of numerous optical and infrared instrumentation.

Sheila received her undergraduate degree in Physics Magna Cum Laude from Harvard in 1991, after which she became involved with the Teach for America program. Between 1991-93, Sheila taught at Edwards Jr. High in Rocky Mount, NC. Afterwards, Sheila continued her education at Harvard and completed both her Masters in History of Science and Doctorate in Physics in 2001. Sheila has served as a project leader for Teach for America-UNC partnership, as well as for the SMART Summer Mentorship and Research Training workshop for high school teachers and students.

We are thrilled to have Dr. Kannappan share her thoughts with us and look forward to seeing you all there!
